Benjamin "Ben" Sportel, Aug. 3, 1925 - Feb. 8, 2014. Benjamin "Ben" Sportel, age 88, of Willmar, formerly of Roseland, died Saturday, Feb. 8, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Roseland Reformed Church in Roseland. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Roseland Reformed Church in Roseland. Arrangements are with the Tri-County Funeral Home of Prinsburg. www.tricountyfuneral.com Benjamin Sportel was born on August 3, 1925, on the family farm in Renville County, Minnesota, the son of George Sr. and Jennie (Hoogerman) Sportel. He grew up in Renville County and received his education in the District #91 School. On June 21, 1946, Ben was united in marriage to Louise Brouwer at the Roseland Reformed Church. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed in Roseland Township and Svea. From 1963 to 1991, Ben was employed at Willmar Manufacturing as a supervisor. On January 29, 1999, Louise died. On June 23, 2001, Ben was married to Donna Ila Mae Swenson. They made their home in Roseland and just recently moved into Sunrise Village in Willmar. Ben was a faithful member of the Roseland Reformed Church. His hobbies included woodworking, camping, gardening and mowing. He is survived by his wife, Donna of Willmar; his four children, Beverly (and LeRoy) Banks of Mesa, AZ., Brad (and Beth) Sportel of Lake Lillian, Steve (and Karyn) Sportel of Carlos and Darryl (and Sue) Sportel of Bloomington; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, George (and Marcella) Sportel of Prinsburg; one sister, Janet (and Clarence) Ledeboer of Richfield; one stepdaughter, Becky Norine (and John Schulz) of Minneapolis; three step-grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Louise; one daughter, Barbara; three brothers, Dick, Claus and Ben; two sisters, Ella Gernaat and Grace Blom; and one stepdaughter, Marilyn Klatt).

October 16 1926 January 15 2020 (age 93). Obituary Donna Ila Mae Sportel died January 15, 2020 at Sunnyview Assisted Living in Atwater, MN after a long experience with cancer and dementia. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Jan 24, at the Rosendale United Methodist Church. Interment will be held in the church cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday Jan. 23, at the Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home and again one hour prior to service at the church. Memorials can be made in her name to Habitat for Humanity of West Central Minnesota, Kandiyohi County Area Food Shelf, Atwater Area Help for Seniors, or simply do an act of kindness for someone less fortunate. www.petersonbrothers.com Donna was born October 16, 1926 in Lake Elizabeth Township, to Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Clough Sr. and Minnie (Bosch) Clough. She attended Kandiyohi County District # 96. In 1945 Donna married Arlie Klatt, and they established their home south of Atwater. They had two children, Rebecca (Becky) and Marilyn. In addition to being a farm wife, Donna worked at Holm Brothers Hardware in Atwater for over 15 years. Arlie died in 1974. In 1977 Donna married Lester Swenson, and they lived on Lake Lillian until his death in 1995. In 2001 Donna married Ben Sportel and moved to Roseland, where they lived until 2013 when declining health required them to move to Sunrise Village in Willmar. Ben died in 2014 and Donna moved to Sunnyview in Atwater. Her family is grateful for the attentive care she received from the staff at Sunnyview . She was also supported by Rice Hospice in the final weeks of her life. DonnaÆs passions in life included caring for her family, growing large gardens, arranging flowers, taking care of pets, craft projects, and supporting numerous social causes. She spent countless hours volunteering her time for her churches, Habitat for Humanity, MOPS, Kandiyohi County Food Shelf, Crop Walk, and the DFL party. She strongly believed in ôdoing things that would make life better for allö and looked in particular for ways to help those who had been marginalized. Despite being slowed by health issues, Donna maintained her curiosity and passion for her family, nature and animals her whole life. She leaves to mourn her vibrant spirit: daughter Becky (John Schulz) of Minneapolis, granddaughter Karry Haley (Jason Sing) of Minnetrista, grandson Lance Rosenquist (Tiffany Hintz) of Atwater, grandson Dylan Rosenquist of Buffalo, 8 greatgrandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and numerous step-children, and step-grand-children. Donna was preceded in death by her daughter Marilyn Klatt and son-in-law Lanny Rosenquist, her parents, her husbands, her brother Frank Clough Jr., sister-in-law Marie Clough, nephew Kevin Clough and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. (Grace Blom, 78, Pipestone, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006 at Pipestone County Medical Center. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Christian Reformed Church. Pipestone, with Rev. Brad Meinders officiating. Pallbearers were Don DeWeerd, Dennis Sportel, Bob Sportel, Don Ruiter, Bryan Francis and Scott Blom. Interment was in New Woodlawn Cemetery. Grace was born to George and Jennie (Hoogerman) Sportel on June 22, 1927 in Renville County at her parents' home. She moved with her family to Kaniyohi County where she attended country school. After her education she worked at Jennie-O-Foods. She married Albert Blom at the Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg in 1951. Following their marriage they lived and farmed in Grange Township, Pipestone County. She worked in housekeeping at the Pipestone County Medical Center for 13 years. On Friday, Jan. 6 she was admitted to the Pipestone County Medical Center. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Pipestone. She is survived by her husband, Albert Blom, Pipestone; three children, Mary (Buddie) Adkins, Ankeny, Iowa; Roger Blom and Lyle (Julie) Blom, all of Pipestone; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ben (Donna) Sportel, Roseland; and George (Marcella) Sportel, Prinsburg; one sister, Janet (Clarence) Ledaboer, Richfield; one brother-in-law, Phil Gernaat, Kalamazoo, Mich.; one sister-in-law, Grace Sportel, Prinsburg. Geboren op 22-06-1927 te Renville Co, MN.(Albert Blom was born to Walter and Bertha (Schelhaas) Blom on June 29, 1924 near Woodstock, Minnesota where he was raised and attended rural school. In 1942, he moved with his parents to a farm northwest of Pipestone, Minnesota. He served in the US Army during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to the farm. In 1951, he was united in marriage to Grace Sportel. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed in Grange Township in Pipestone County where he lived and farmed for 59 years. During these years, he farmed, served on the school and church board. Grace preceded him in death on January 11, 2006. After her death, he continued to live on the farm until February of 2010 when he became a resident at the Good Samaritan Communities in Pipestone. He died there on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at the age of 86 years, six months and six days. Albert was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Pipestone. He enjoyed farming, gardening, fishing, feeding his many cats and birds and going for rides. He also enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He is survived by three children, Mary Adkins and her husband Buddie of Ankeny, Iowa, Roger Blom and Lyle Blom and his wife Julie, all of Pipestone; two grandchildren, Leah and Emily Blom; three step-grandchildren, Charissa Brouwer and her husband Mark, Shannon Hagena and her husband Jarrod, and Traci Grant and her husband Josh; seven step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Laura Kooiman of Pipestone; one brother, Bernie Blom of Pipestone; two brothers-in-law, Ben Sportel and his wife Donna of Roseland, Minnesota and George Sportel and his wife Marcella of Prinsburg, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Janet Ledaboer and her husband Clarence of Richfield, Minnesota; one brother-in-law, Phil Gernaat of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and many nieces, nephews, family, friends and neighbors. Obituary. George Sportel, Jr., age 83, of Prinsburg, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon Oct. 13, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar from injuries from a fall. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 18, at First Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg. Visitation will be Friday 5-7 PM at the Tri-County Funeral Home in Prinsburg and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Holland Township Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Rice Hospice in Willmar, First Christian Reformed Church or Central Minnesota Christian School in Prinsburg.(www.tricountyfuneral.com). George Sportel, Jr. was born on November 16, 1930, in Roseland Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Jennie (Hoogerman) and George Sportel, Sr. He grew up in the Roseland area and attended District 91 school. On April 1, 1952, he was married to Grace Marcus and they made their home in Prinsburg. George worked for Willmar Manufacturing for 30 years serving as a supervisor. He was a member of the Prinsburg Fire Department for 20 years, and served many years on the Prinsburg Village Council and as President of the Tri-County Burial Association. George's first wife, Grace, died on February 27, 1999. George remarried on June 16, 2001, to Marcella Ann (Roelofs) Ulferts. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg and served as a Deacon and Elder and belonged to the Men's Bible Study Groups. George was a committed family man and a friend to all. He enjoyed traveling, visiting and playing games with family and friends. His love for family extended to wherever his kids and grandkids lived. Anyone who came into contact with George was blessed by his kind and gentle nature, encouragement, sincere faith, and sense of humor. He is survived by his wife, Marcella of Prinsburg, 3 sons; Robert (and Kathy) Sportel of Prinsburg, Randall (and Deb) Sportel of Grand Rapids, MI, and Joel (and Susan) Sportel of Grand Rapids, MI, 1 daughter, Diane (and Daniel) Ridderhoff of Colorado Springs, CO, 1 stepson, Warren Ulferts of Albuquerque, NM and 1 stepdaughter, Rosaleen (and Norman) Marcus of Lafayette, LA. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren, 1 sister, Janet (and Clarence) Ledeboer of Minneapolis, 1 brother-in-law; Phil (and Barb) Gernaat of Kalamazoo, MI and sister-in-law, Donna Sportel of Atwater, besides other relatives and friends.
