Obituary. Gritter, Arthur (Arthur John), aged 87, passed into eternal peace on Friday, February 10, 2012. After serving in Europe in WWII, Art returned to Grand Rapids and graduated first from Calvin College, then the University of Michigan. He married his wife of 63 years, Laura Jean Karsies, and started his family. Always the business man and master of sales, he owned Gritter and Westveer Draperies for most of his working life. Never one to retire, he worked in the window treatment business until he was 85 years old, retiring only when health prevented working. A loving and generous provider, Art will be dearly remembered by his family, wife, Jean; sons, Gary (Barbara), David (Deborah), Darrell (Debra); six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and brother, John (Jan) of Kalamazoo. Preceding Art in death are his parents, Gerrit and Marie; his brother and wife, Jerry and Donna; sisters and husbands, Kay and Ted Klaver, Jane and Harold Isenga; and grandson, Neal. Funeral services for Art will be held at 3 PM Friday at Woodlawn CRC in the chapel of Calvin College, 3201 Burton St. SE with Pastor Mike Abma and Pastor Peter Jonker officiating. She was a charter member of Boston Square Christian Reformed Church where she held the positions of church secretary, Sunday School superintendent, and member of the Christian Education committee and worked on the Boston Square newsletter. (Obituary. Gritter (Nee Penning), Marjorie Phyllis age 88 of Grand Rapids, passed away July 23, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger James, in 2015. Marjorie is survived by her children: David (Linda) Gritter of Muskegon, Judy (Pete) Petro of Petoskey, Bob Gritter of Bayonet Point, Florida, and Karen Gritter of Gaylord. Grandchildren: Mark (Marissa) Gritter of Eagan, Minnesota, Dan Gritter (Donna, fiance) of Hopewell Junction, New York, Sarah (Jeff) Greenfield of Kentwood, Jody Blain of Grand Rapids, Matt Gritter of Poughkeepsie, New York. Preceded in death by John (Mick) Penning, Olive (Gary) Renkema. Marjorie began her career as an office manager, and was proficient in taking dictation in shorthand. Later she was a partner to her husband Roger in operating a greenhouse growing tomatoes in the summer and lettuce in the winter. She spent many hours on her knees harvesting leaf lettuce. She was an avid reader, a cook who liked to create desserts and quick breads, and an active participant in the Coffee Break ministry of Rogers Heights Christian Reformed Church. In her later years, as a resident of Fulton Manor and Porter Hills, she became known as an expert at Bible trivia and crossword puzzles. Her memorial service will be held on Friday, August 24 at 2:00 PM at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, 1530 Franklin Street SE. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Jack Gritter, in 2011. Shirley will be remembered for an endearing smile that always accompanied her kind heart and love for life. She had a wonderful positive attitude and a special love for family. Shirley was a longtime active member of Westend Christian Reformed Church.
