(Obituary: Tacoma, Mrs. Roelfine "Ruth" of Kalamazoo, went to be with her Lord Tuesday evening, February 4, 2003. Ruth was born July 7, 1921 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Gerrit and Emma (DeVries) Sportel, and had been a lifelong resident in the area. Prior to her retirement she was employed with Western Michigan University for 8 years in the food service department. She was also a member of the Westwood Christian Reformed Church, and enjoyed crocheting and gardening. On September 20, 1946 she was united in marriage to Tony Tacoma, who preceded her in death on September 9, 1987. She was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Egbert, Henry, and Ronald Sportel; and a sister, Wilma Molenaar. Surviving are 3 daughters and their spouses, Sheryl (Vernon) Homolka of Vallejo, CA, Janice (Kelven) Betterley of Mattawan, Ruth (William) Bongers of Parchment; 3 grandchildren, Sarah Tallmadge, Matthew and Ryan Bongers; a sister and brother, Connie (John) Visser of Kalamazoo, Adrian (Wilma) Sportel of Scotts; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held 10:00 o'clock Friday at the Westwood Christian Reformed Church, 620 North Hampton with Pastor Bill Fernhout and Pastor Dale Slings officiating. Private interment will be in Ft. (Duffin, Robert W. "Bob" Robert Duffin, 70, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2019. He was born August 3, 1949 in Kalamazoo to Arthur and Rosella "Dolly" (Labadie) Duffin. Bob was united in marriage to Marcia Sportel on April 24, 1981. He served in the U.S. Army from January of 1970 until honorably discharged in October of 1972. Bob's hobbies included golfing, in which he had two holes-in-one, camping and fishing. His favorite past-time was wood working and especially building decks. Bob is survived by his wife, Marcia Duffin; children, Lori (Austin Goodrich) Duffin and Matthew Duffin; 3 grandchildren, Austin, Allie and Logan; god-daughter, Ellorie; sister, Sharon (Dave) Meadows; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and half-brother, William Pond. John served his country in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in May of 1946. John was employed as a Building Machinist at the Kalamazoo Gazette for 39 years and served as a volunteer fire fighter on the Westwood Fire Dept. He was a brick layer for over 50 years, and was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church. Adrian was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters, Egbert, Henry, and Ronald Sportel, Wilma Molenaar, and Ruth Tacoma. On June 24, 1955 he was united in marriage to the former Wilma VanZanten, who survives. Prior to her retirement she was employed for several years with KVISD(KRESA) in the accounting department. She was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church. Wilma was preceded in death by her first husband, Nelson Groenheide on September 1, 1953. On June 24, 1955 she was united in marriage to Adrian Sportel, who preceded her in death on December 13, 2003. Also preceding her in death was her sister, Carol Modderman. (Lloyd, Wilma 7/17/1924 - 5/23/2015 Kalamazoo Age 90, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Bronson Hospital. She was born in Kalamazoo on July 17, 1924, the daughter of the late Adrian and Gladys (Linihan) Sportel. She remained a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo and was always proud of her community. In 1945 she married Arlon Lloyd who preceded her in passing on July 13, 1963. She was also preceded in passing by a sister, Janet Schauer. Wilma was a strong Democrat and very pro-union. She loved being involved in political issues and was never afraid to speak her mind. She was a hard worker who was employed by the Eckrich Company for over twenty years. When not working she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother and friend who will be missed by all who knew her. Wilma is survived by two sons, Rick (JoAnn) Lloyd, and Michael (Marie) Lloyd; five grandchildren, Craig (Melinda) Lloyd, Karen (Scott) Lowder, Becky (Jason) Waller, Maya (Randy) Rockafellow, and Monee Lloyd; six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and friends.
